Solar powered traffic signals are usually designed for 14 hours continuous operation and 10 hours operation in blinking mode (usually when there is less traffic at night). solar traffic signals have an array of ultra-bright long life LEDs. The power consumption of these LED is also much lower. Since traffic signaling systems have to very reliable, usually a hybrid system using both solar power and grid electricity are used. In countries where there is less sunlight, they may be used for warning signal lights.
